On today’s date (03-20-19) at approximately 1:15am, the New Braunfels Police Department and the New Braunfels Fire Department were dispatched to the 2100 block of I-35 South on the southbound frontage road for an accident involving a vehicle striking a pedestrian. Officers and paramedics arrived and found an adult male who had been struck by an SUV and was deceased at the scene.
The deceased victim has not yet been positively identified. Once a positive identification has been made, and next of kin has been notified, his identity will be released. The driver of the vehicle, a 19-year old male from New Braunfels, was not injured in the incident.
The southbound I-35 frontage road in that area was closed for approximately 3 hours while the NBPD Traffic Unit conducted their on-site investigation. The initial results of that investigation indicate that the victim was a pedestrian pushing a shopping cart while walking in the left lane of traffic on the two-lane southbound frontage road. He was wearing dark-colored clothing and the driver of the vehicle did not see the pedestrian until the point of impact. The investigation into the accident continues; however, at this time, no charges are expected to be filed against the driver of the SUV.
The New Braunfels Police Department would like to remind all residents that when walking along busy roadways, to always walk while facing traffic and to wear light-colored or reflective clothing so that drivers can see you from a distance.
