On Nov. 11, 2019, at approximately 9:30pm, the New Braunfels Police Department and the New Braunfels Fire Department responded to the 3800 block of I-35 South (southbound main lanes just before Solms Road) for reports of a major accident between a passenger car and an 18-wheeler.
First responders arrived and found that an 18-wheeler that was driving slowly because of mechanical issues had been rear-ended by a black Toyota Corolla that was travelling at highway speeds. The driver of the car, a 32-year old male from New Braunfels, first had to be extracted from the vehicle by firefighters before he was transported by ground EMS to the San Antonio Military Medical Center (SAMMC) where, as of this release, he is listed in critical but stable condition. The driver of the 18-wheeler, a 30-year old male from Michigan, was uninjured in the crash.
All of the southbound I-35 main lanes in that area were closed for approximately 2 hours while the NBPD Traffic Unit conducted their on-site investigation of the crash. Although the investigation continues, alcohol does not appear to be a contributing factor in this accident and no charges have been filed.
