Bicycle and Pedestrian Network Plan

The City of New Braunfels Strategic Plan directed staff to create a sidewalk inventory, assess pedestrian and bicycle connectivity to establish a baseline for measuring progress, and increase bikeway, trail, and sidewalk miles within the city. The most effective way to capture this data and identify projects that promote these goals is to create a Bicycle and Pedestrian Network Plan that includes an inventory and connectivity assessment of current facilities, as well as identifying project areas for future implementation. It will be developed to complement and support the existing Hike and Bike Plan that was adopted in 2019 and have a stronger project development focus.

Walking and biking are essential to a healthy, connected, and vibrant community. In New Braunfels, many residents want safer ways to cross major barriers like I-35, the railroad, and the Guadalupe and Comal Rivers. This plan will help the City:

  • Improve safety and comfort for people walking and biking
  • Expand access to schools, parks, and key destinations
  • Support healthy and active lifestyles
  • Connect neighborhoods with trails and greenways
  • Build a stronger economy through tourism and local business activity

The Bicycle & Pedestrian Network Plan is also a tool for prioritizing projects and pursuing funding. Once complete, it will guide the City in applying for state and federal grants, forming partnerships, and directing local investments. Community input is central to this process—residents are encouraged to take the online survey, explore the interactive map, and attend public events to share feedback that will shape the vision and guide future improvements.
