On September 3rd, 2024, contractors for the City of New Braunfels will begin work on the Common Street Pedestrian Improvement Project, adding a number of pedestrian amenities along Common Street from Liberty Avenue to Loop 337. The $1.6 million project, which is expected to last approximately four months (depending on weather and other factors), is being funded by the New Braunfels Economic Development Corporation and the Alamo Area Metropolitan Planning Organization (AAMPO).
The contractor, Lonestar Sitework, LLC, will be adding 5 to 6-foot sidewalks on both sides of Common Street, ADA-compliant curb ramps, crosswalks, two Pedestrian Hybrid Beacons at Central Avenue (by Lamar Elementary) and East Avenue (near the New Braunfels Public Library and Comal County Fairgrounds), as well as new driveway approaches for property owners along Common Street.
The contractor will begin along the south side lanes of Common Street, starting at Washington Avenue, and will work their way east in segments by closing the outside lane of traffic for two to three blocks at a time until reaching Loop 337. Then, the contractors will move to the north side of the roadway and work their way back towards Liberty Avenue. Property owners in the area have been notified of the upcoming work and drivers using that section of Common Street should expect minor construction-related delays for the duration of the project, from approximately 7am to 7pm each day.
