Death Investigation Following Residential Structure Fire

Media Releases Posted on July 29, 2025

On July 28, 2025, at approximately 2:30pm, the New Braunfels Fire Department was called to the 2600 block of McCrae for reports of a structure fire. Firefighters arrived and found a two-story home with heavy smoke coming from the residence.

Crews made entry into the home to fight the fire but were met with high heat conditions and a fire that had spread into the subfloor between the first and second story. So, crews exited the residence and began an external attack. Residents of the home were not initially on scene but arrived while crews were fighting the fire. Once the fire was under control crews reentered the structure and located a deceased male inside. Investigators also discovered preliminary evidence that the fire had been intentionally set.

The deceased male, identified as 37-year old Kennedy Miguel Herrejon of New Braunfels, had suffered from an apparent gunshot wound as well as burn injuries, prompting concurrent investigations by the New Braunfels Police Department Criminal Investigations Division (CID) and by the New Braunfels Fire Department Fire Marshal’s Office (FMO). Next of kin has been notified and an autopsy is pending to determine cause of death. The State Fire Marshal’s Office is also assisting with the investigation, which is ongoing.

No other civilian or firefighter injuries were reported during this incident. There continues to be a presence at the residence by both Police and Fire Department personnel as the investigation continues.
