Applications are now being accepted for the 2023 class of New Braunfels City University, a free program that gives citizens a first-hand look at the inner workings of their city government.
City University is designed to give participants a greater understanding of essential services, programs, and initiatives provided by the City and offers an opportunity to hear from each department on their goals and primary functions.
Since its inception in 2011, City University has graduated approximately 315 participants. Many have gone on to serve on various city boards and commissions, including New Braunfels City Council, the Transportation & Traffic Advisory Board, the Bond Advisory Committee, and the Building Standards Commission, and all have left more knowledgeable about their local government.
“City University is a chance for residents to have a hands-on, interactive experience hearing from City officials and employees, and exploring facilities,” said Director of Communications and Community Engagement Jenna Vinson. “This provides participants with a unique understanding of how their City government works, helps educate residents, and continues the City’s commitment to transparency.”
The 2023 City University program is an 8-week class with sessions held weekly, on Thursdays, from 5:30pm to 8:30pm beginning March 23, plus a graduation ceremony to be held prior to the New Braunfels City Council meeting on Monday, May 8 from 5:30pm to 6:30pm. Each meeting will give participants an up-close look at how city services are provided, with presentations, demonstrations, and tours, including City administration, Police & Fire, Public Works, Parks, and Library.
