Messages from the Mayor Posted on March 01, 2025

Mayor Neal Linnartz

New Braunfels is a city that celebrates its vibrant culture, rich heritage, and creative spirit, which is why I am thrilled to invite our talented local artists to leave their mark on our city in an exciting new way.

The City of New Braunfels has launched the Traffic Signal Box Art Program, a unique initiative designed to turn everyday infrastructure into public art. We are inviting local artists to submit their designs for a chance to have their work displayed on traffic signal boxes throughout downtown New Braunfels. A total of seven designs will be selected during this initial program, with more possible in the years to come.

This year’s theme, “New Braunfels: Life’s a Splash!”, is a celebration of everything that makes our city a dynamic, engaging, and joyful place to live, and this theme invites artists to interpret the idea of “a splash” in their own unique way. Think of the way music, culture, food, and history shape our life here in New Braunfels. We want to see bold colors, imaginative compositions, and designs that capture the essence of our community, and we’re looking for art that reflects our city’s energy, diversity, and charm.

One of the most exciting aspects of this program is that it’s open to all local artists, regardless of experience level. Whether you are a seasoned professional artist, a hobbyist, or a student with a passion for art, we encourage you to submit your artwork! The only requirement is that you must reside within the New Braunfels city limits or the city’s Extra Territorial Jurisdiction (ETJ).

Each artist can submit up to two designs, which can be created in a variety of artistic mediums, including painting, photography, mixed media, or digital art. While original work is required, you are welcome to submit an existing piece that fits the theme. Or create something new specifically for this project!

Beyond the opportunity to showcase your talent, selected artists will also receive a $500 stipend for their work. More importantly, this is a chance to contribute to the beautification of our city in a lasting and meaningful way. Public art has the power to inspire and bring people together. By participating in this program, you are not only creating something beautiful - you are enhancing the experience of everyone who lives, works, and visits New Braunfels. Imagine seeing your artwork on display as families walk downtown and visitors explore our shops and restaurants. Art has the ability to transform the ordinary (like clunky traffic signal boxes) into something extraordinary, and we want your vision to be part of that transformation.

Submitting your artwork is simple! Applications and digital artwork submissions are due by 5pm on March 28, 2025. The selection process will be conducted by a six-member Art Selection Committee, which will evaluate entries based on:

  • Visual impact
  • Engagement, interactivity, and potential for photo opportunities
  • Connection to New Braunfels
  • Creativity and uniqueness
  • Alignment with the project theme

Up to 10 points will be awarded in each category. Once selections are made, the New Braunfels Downtown Board will assign each chosen piece to one of seven designated traffic signal boxes.

The final selections will be announced during the New Braunfels Downtown Board meeting on May 20, 2025, and installations are expected to take place in June 2025. For full submission guidelines and to apply online, visit www.newbraunfels.gov/trafficsignalart.

New Braunfels is a city full of talented, passionate individuals who bring color and character to our community every day. This project is an opportunity to celebrate that talent and bring even more beauty to our streets. If you are an artist, this is your moment. If you know an artist, encourage them to submit. I can’t wait to see how you bring this theme to life.
