Heavy rains overnight have caused an increased flow of water in the Comal River, with the current river flow (as of this release) measuring more than 1800 cfs (cubic feet per second), with poor water clarity and debris along the riverbanks and at the Tube Chute dam.
Therefore, effective immediately by order of the Chief of Police, access to the Comal River in New Braunfels for recreation is temporarily closed. City officials will reevaluate river conditions on Friday (June 13) to determine when river recreation can resume.
Meanwhile, the Guadalupe River in New Braunfels is currently flowing at approximately 800 cfs. Anyone choosing to use the Guadalupe River for recreation is required to wear a life vest and should be aware that water clarity is poor and they should remain cautious about debris that may not be visible under the water’s surface.
Additionally, the Spring Fed Pool at the Landa Park Aquatic Complex will be temporarily closed for the day; however, the rest of the Complex, including the Olympic Pool, will remain open.
The National Weather Service is predicting additional thunderstorm possibilities and those ongoing weather factors will be considered in any decisions made by city officials. Please remember to TURN AROUND, DON’T DROWN whenever you see water over a roadway and never drive around barricades.
