At their meeting on February 26, 2024, New Braunfels City Council approved three economic development projects totaling approximately $9.4 million. Those projects were approved by, and will be funded through, the New Braunfels Economic Development Corporation (NBEDC).
Here are the projects that will now be receiving funds from the NBEDC after receiving approval from New Braunfels City Council:
$1.5 million to assist the New Braunfels Youth Collaborative (NBYC) with renovations of the gymnasium located at 407 West Mill Street (formerly the New Braunfels ISD Education Center). The planned work includes the installation of a new HVAC unit, roof repairs, paint, new flooring, replacing fixtures and finishes, and upgrades to meet ADA compliance. Those renovations will allow the NBYC to host programs, events, sports leagues, fitness instruction, dances, and more.
$7.2 million for the Castell Avenue Phase 1 - Coll Street Drainage Improvement Project. This drainage project will address drainage concerns by making improvements to the storm drain system on Coll Street between Castell Avenue and the Comal River.
$700,000 for the Common Street Pedestrian Improvement Project. This project will improve pedestrian connectivity between neighborhoods, city parks, the New Braunfels Public Library, Lamar Elementary School, and the Comal County Fairgrounds by enhancing pedestrian mobility and safety. The project includes new sidewalks and curb ramps on both sides of Common Street between S. Liberty Street and Loop 337 as well as protected pedestrian crossings at key intersections. The $700,000 being contributed by the NBEDC represents 20% of the total cost for the project, with the other 80% being provided by funding allocated through the Alamo Area Metropolitan Planning Organization (AAMPO) Transportation Alternatives Program.
