Market Plaza to Receive Texas Historical Marker

Media Releases Posted on May 14, 2025

A plaque dedicating a downtown New Braunfels park as a historic Texas site will be unveiled and dedicated during an upcoming ceremony. The Texas Historical Commission has officially recognized Market Plaza as a Texas historical site, and the City of New Braunfels has teamed up with the Comal County Historical Commission and the New Braunfels Parks Foundation to celebrate the honor at a ceremony scheduled for May 28th, 2025, from 9am to 10am, at Market Plaza, located at 292 Tolle Street.

Market Plaza, located in downtown New Braunfels just off East San Antonio Street, originally served as the central market for German immigrants, offering meat and goods to early settlers. Over time, it evolved into a vibrant community space, hosting events, circuses, and festivals. However, by the mid 20th century, Market Plaza also drew concern from City leaders because of noise and sanitation issues, prompting a debate about transforming the space into a park, playground, or a library. Eventually, it was decided to turn Market Plaza into a city park, which it remains to this day, continuing the recreational use of this culturally significant space.

Texas Historical Markers can be found in all 254 Texas counties with more than 16,000 markers across the state. New Braunfels has approximately 60 of these markers, including the newest marker that will be dedicated at the upcoming event. That ceremony will include remarks from City and County leaders, members of the Parks Foundation, and the Comal County Historical Commission. Again, the historical marker dedication ceremony for Market Plaza is scheduled for May 28th, 2025, from 9am to 10am, at Market Plaza, located at 292 Tolle Street.
