The New Braunfels Police Department is proud to announce that for the 8th year, the Texas Department of Transportation has awarded NBPD with the federally-funded Selective Traffic Enforcement Program grant. Known as S.T.E.P., this grant funds extra patrols targeting distracted drivers, speeders, drunk drivers, those who disregard traffic signals and markings at busy intersections, and those not wearing their seatbelts.
Each year, the S.T.E.P. grant provides funding for extra patrol officers above and beyond the regular patrol and traffic officers throughout the year. The extra funds also allow for increased patrols during peak times of increased traffic (like holidays, festivals, and tourism-related events). While on patrol under the S.T.E.P. grant, the extra officers are specifically looking for distracted drivers, speeders, drunk drivers, those not wearing their seatbelts, and those that disregard traffic signals and markings at busy intersection, all in an effort to make New Braunfels’ streets safer.
The New Braunfels Police Department has been a recipient of this grant since 2008, each year receiving federal funds to provide those extra patrols. Since 2008, NBPD has received over $762,000 in S.T.E.P. grant funding, with another $74,943.10 coming in 2017 to continue those efforts.
And with all of those extra patrols on the streets, the New Braunfels Police Department encourages drivers to buckle up, slow down, put the phone down, and never drink and drive.
