On today’s date (11-16-17), at approximately 8:45am, officers from the New Braunfels Police Department were dispatched to a residence in the 700 block of Wolfeton Way in the Avery Park Subdivision for a report of a Disturbance in Progress between a male and a female.
Officers arrived to find that the 41-year old male was outside of the residence and was holding a knife in his hand while demanding that officers shoot him. A brief standoff between the suspect and officers ended when two trained NBPD officers utilized their department-issued less lethal weapons, specifically bean bag rounds fired from a shotgun. This less lethal alternative is specifically designed to incapacitate without causing serious bodily injury, and it performed exactly as designed. Both rounds successfully struck the man in the leg, causing the man to comply with officer’s orders to drop the knife, and he was taken into custody without further incident.
The male was evaluated and treated at the scene by EMS for non-life threatening injuries sustained from the less lethal rounds. He was subsequently transported to the Guadalupe Regional Medical Center in Seguin for further evaluation. The 32-year old female involved in the initial disturbance remained inside the residence throughout the altercation with police. She was also evaluated at the scene by EMS for a minor, non-life threatening injury sustained during the initial disturbance with the suspect, and she was not transported to the hospital.
A nearby school, Clear Springs Elementary School, briefly went into lockdown during the police activity at the residence, but that lockdown was quickly lifted once the suspect was taken into custody. Criminal charges against the suspect may be pending, and the incident remains under investigation.
