[ARCHIVED] January 2025 - City University

As the Mayor of New Braunfels, I have had the privilege of seeing firsthand how engaged and passionate our community is. Our city thrives because of the dedication of its residents—those who volunteer, serve on boards, participate in city programs, and take pride in the place we all call home. That’s why I’m excited to invite all residents, young and old, to apply for the 2025 classes of City University and Youth City University, two incredible opportunities that allow you to get involved in and learn about the inner workings of your local government.

Since its launch in 2011, City University has empowered over 380 residents to better understand how their city operates. Through this free, 8-week program, participants gain a first-hand look at everything from city administration to public safety, parks, library services, and more. It’s an opportunity to tour City Hall, meet with officials, hear from staff, and learn about the essential services that keep New Braunfels running smoothly. Many of our City University alumni have gone on to serve on boards and commissions, run for City Council, and continue contributing in meaningful ways to our community. This program is a great way for anyone interested in public service or simply becoming a more informed and engaged citizen to get started.

But City University is not just for adults! It’s also an excellent program for young people. This year marks the second year of our Youth City University program, designed specifically for high school students. This program gives students the opportunity to learn about city government, ask questions, and explore how they can get involved in the community. It’s a perfect starting point for those interested in leadership, public service, or just gaining a deeper understanding of how their city works. Youth City University will run concurrently with the adult program and is open to students in grades 9 through 12 who are residents of New Braunfels. At the end of the program, students will present their experience to the City Council, offering a unique chance to share their thoughts on local government and inspire their peers to take an active role in the community.

Both City University and Youth City University are free, and the programs are designed to be highly interactive. They offer participants a chance to ask questions, engage in discussions, and hear directly from those who are working every day to make New Braunfels a great place to live, work, and raise a family. The 2024 City University and Youth City University program will run for eight weeks, beginning on Wednesday, March 26, 2025, and ending with a graduation ceremony on Monday, May 12, 2025. Sessions are held on Wednesdays from 5:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m.

These programs provide more than just an opportunity to learn about the city’s operations. They are an invitation to become part of the civic fabric that makes our community so special. By gaining a deeper understanding of city government and services, you’ll be better equipped to make informed decisions, advocate for your needs, and help shape the future of New Braunfels.

I encourage you to apply, whether you’re an adult looking to make a greater impact or a young person eager to get involved. Space in these programs is limited, and applications for the 2025 City University class must be submitted by 5:00pm on Friday, February 7, 2025. If you are a high school student, you too can apply for Youth City University, as long as you are a New Braunfels resident and enrolled in grades 9 through 12 at a public, private, or home school.

Applications can be submitted online at www.newbraunfels.gov/CityU. It’s a simple process, and the rewards are immeasurable. The more engaged and informed we are as a community, the better equipped we will be to face the challenges and opportunities ahead. Don’t miss this chance to deepen your connection to the city we all love. I look forward to seeing you in the 2025 City University or Youth City University class and working together to continue building a stronger, more engaged New Braunfels.
