Residential Recycling Collection
When to Put Your Garbage and Recycling Cart Out
Residential garbage, recycling, and green waste collection begins at 6 am.
Carts can be placed on the curb after 8pm the night before your pick-up day or before 6 am on your pick-up day.
If carts are not on the curb by 6 am on your collection day, a fee of $27.06 will be assessed if residents want trucks to return before their next scheduled pick-up day.
See City Ordinance Section 110-4 for more details on residential garbage, recycling, and green waste collection.

Residential Recycling Overview
Curbside residential recycling collection is provided to all single-family and some smaller multifamily dwellings. Residential recycling collection rates are $4.26 per month (last adjusted in 2010). Residents who live in apartments and condominiums can still recycle, but must drop-off their recyclables at the City Recycle Center.
Please Remember:
- Do not bag items - leave them loose in your cart.
- Become familiar with the accepted items list. Keep all plastic bags, styrofoam, and trash out.
- Clean out containers for recycling.
- Flatten boxes - cardboard should be cut into pieces no longer than 18 inches.
- Keep your cart 5 feet away from any obstacle, including Green Waste bags.
- Place your cart at the curb with the wheels and handle facing your home. Lid must be completely closed.
- Place your cart out no earlier than 8 p.m. the day before your collection day.
- Place your cart at the curb no later than 6 a.m. on your collection day.
More Recycling Info
Batteries
The City of New Braunfels does not provide recycling services for most battery types—batteries are NOT permitted in your recycle cart. When not disposed of properly, discarded batteries contribute to fires in trucks, landfills, and recycling centers.
Check local retailers or search online to find options for battery recycling. All batteries can be safely recycled at the City’s Household Hazardous Waste drop-off events. Follow the City events calendar to stay up to date on all special events and drop-off days or download the CONB Waste Mobile App.
For more information on how to properly dispose of your batteries, head to Call2Recycle.
Battery Information
Single-Use Batteries
- Alkaline Manganese: Mercury has been phased out of these batteries so they can be disposed of in the landfill. However, they do contain metals that can be recovered if recycled properly.
- Silver Oxide: These button batteries are often found in watches. These batteries contain mercury and should not be disposed of in the landfill.
- Lead Acid Batteries: These batteries power the engines of cars, boats, etc. They are extremely toxic and must be recycled. Fortunately, many automotive shops accept the old battery when you purchase a new battery. You can also bring them to Household Hazardous Waste events.
Rechargeable Batteries
- Alkaline Manganese: Mercury has been phased out of these batteries so they can be disposed of in the landfill. However, they do contain metals that can be recovered if recycled properly.
- Nickel-cadmium, Nickel Metal Hydride & Lithium Ion - These batteries can be purchased as a substitute for alkaline manganese batteries but also represent the batteries found in your cell phone, cordless power tools, and other cordless electronic devices.
Plastic Bags
Do not place plastic bags, plastic film, or shrink wrap into your blue recycle cart. Plastic bags are not recyclable through the curbside recycling service or at the City Recycle Center. These bags become entangled in the sorting machinery at the material recovery facility where recyclables are sorted.
Please take your plastic bags to local retailers, such as HEB, Target, Best Buy, or Walmart, for recycling. These locations have a drop-off recycling bin or barrel near their entrances just for plastic bags.
To reduce waste, consider using reusable bags at the grocery store instead of single-use plastic bags. Reusing plastic bags you do accumulate can also be a great alternative to disposal.
Electronics
Where Can I Recycle Electronics Locally?
Several local electronics retailers accept various electronics for recycling, or electronics can often be donated to charity organizations. Remember to clear any personal data before donating or recycling electronic devices. In Texas, local businesses partner with manufacturers to provide electronics recycling as required by state law. These locations accept various electronics from consumers once personal data has been removed.
To find more information and a nearby location, visit the TCEQ website and the Texas Recycles Computers website.
Comal County residents may contact (830) 643-3781 for recycling information.
The City of New Braunfels currently offers one, free Electronics Drop-Off event in January each year. Follow the City events calendar to stay up to date on all special events and drop-off days or download the CONB Waste Mobile App.
Plastic Foam
Please Note: Only white plastic foam is accepted!
The City of New Braunfels accepts completely white plastic foam at its drop-off location - City Recycle Center, 488 S. Castell Ave.
The type of plastic foam currently accepted is called expanded polystyrene (EPS), commonly identified with the #6 code. If it is not clearly marked with the #6 emblem, it will likely not be accepted.
All foam MUST be free of food residue, tape, labels, and any other items that might be attached to the foam.
Bring foam in a bag or container that can be easily and quickly emptied.
Mattress Disposal & Recycling
The City of New Braunfels provides disposal (landfill) services for mattresses at Bulky Goods Drop-Off events and by scheduling of curbside bulk pick up services.

Shredded Paper
Shredded paper is not accepted in the blue recycling carts or at the City Recycling Center due to processing restrictions at the Waste Management recycling facility. Because shredded paper is too small to be properly sorted, it can interfere with equipment and contaminate other recyclable materials. Residents have two options for proper disposal:
- Bring sensitive documents to one of the City’s scheduled Shred Day events for secure shredding and recycling. Please check the City Events Calendar for upcoming dates.
- If you already have shredded paper, securely bag it and place it in your garbage cart.
