[ARCHIVED] Construction on NBEDC-Funded Projects Getting Underway

NBEDC_Projects

Two projects funded by the New Braunfels Economic Development Corporation (NBEDC) will soon be getting underway. The NBEDC governs the use of economic development sales tax dollars to fund projects that encourage and promote the general economic welfare of the City, including quality of life, transportation, and public infrastructure improvement projects. Funding for the Last Public Exit Improvement Project and the Landa Lake Dam Improvement Project was approved by the NBEDC in April of this year, followed by New Braunfels City Council’s approval in May.

Last Public Exit Improvement Project

On December 12th, 2024, contractors for the City of New Braunfels will begin work on the Last Public Exit Improvement Project which, when complete, will improve safety for those exiting the Comal River.  The $1.2 million project is expected to last approximately three months (depending on weather and other factors). The contractor, Austin Filter Systems, will be replacing the bottom stairs of the Last Public Exit and installing an underwater landing to improve safety, ease of exiting the river, and ADA accessibility. The Last Public Exit will be closed for the duration of the construction, which means any river traffic (including kayaks, paddleboards, and tubes) will be directed to exit the Comal River at the Garden Street Bridge. Signage ahead of that exit will be in place for the duration of the project, which is expected to be complete before the beginning of the summer river recreation season.

Landa Lake Dam Improvement Project

In January, contractors for the City of New Braunfels will begin work on the Landa Lake Dam Improvement Project which will improve the stability of the structure in compliance with the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality (TCEQ) Dam Safety Program. The $1 million dollar project includes placement of concrete reinforcements along the dam structure by the contractor, Dalrymple Gravel and Contracting Company, as well as the placement of large stones (known as rip rap) in the overflow channel to address erosion and improve stability, and the replacement of the sluice gates controlling waterflow from Landa Lake into the Spring Fed Pool. Once underway, the project is expected to take approximately 3 months to complete (depending on weather and other factors). The impact to the public during this project is minimal, but tee box #2 at the Landa Park Golf Course will be adjusted during construction.
