Forecasters with the National Weather Service are predicting freezing temperatures across South Central Texas this weekend, with a hard freeze expected Saturday, Sunday, and Monday nights. Low temperatures are expected in the teens and twenties, with wind chill temperatures dipping into the single digits. The forecast also includes a chance for light precipitation, which could lead to ice accumulation on roads, bridges, and other elevated surfaces.

Crews will actively monitor road conditions and are on call for debris removal or road closures as needed. TxDOT is taking similar precautions on state roadways.

- Keep heaters at least three feet away from anything that can burn, including furniture and curtains
- Look for heaters with overheat protection and automatic shut-off features
- Plug heaters directly into a wall outlet. Never use extension cords or power strips
- Always turn heaters off and unplug them before leaving the room or going to sleep

Cold Weather Tips for Pets
- Make sure your pet has a warm, dry, covered shelter in a garage, shed, or enclosed carport, and check the shelter daily to ensure the bedding stays dry and comfortable.
- Provide your pet with plenty of food and fresh, unfrozen water each day.
- Short-haired breeds may benefit from wearing a coat or sweater when outdoors to help protect them from the cold.
- Bring pets inside when temperatures drop to extreme levels or when a freeze warning is in effect.
- Pets left in extreme temperatures without proper food and shelter are at risk of hypothermia, frostbite, and even death.
