[ARCHIVED] City of New Braunfels Prepares for Freezing Temperatures

City Prepares for Freezing Temperatures

Forecasters with the National Weather Service are predicting freezing temperatures across South Central Texas starting Sunday night, with a hard freeze expected Monday and Tuesday mornings with low temperatures in the teens and wind chill temperatures in the single digits. The forecast also includes a slight chance for very light precipitation which could lead to trace amounts of ice accumulation, mainly on elevated surfaces. As a precaution, the City of New Braunfels is taking several proactive steps and will closely monitor weather conditions as additional decisions are made.

City Facilities & Services

  • Monday, January 15th, is already a City holiday in observance of Martin Luther King Jr. Day with closures scheduled for City Hall, Municipal Court, the Public Library, Parks & Recreation administrative offices, and the Westside Community Center.
    • Please note: Das Rec will continue normal hours of operation on Monday.
    • The Landa Park Golf Course will be closed on Sunday, Monday, and Tuesday and will resume normal hours of operation on Wednesday.
  • Police, Fire & EMS, Public Works, and Solid Waste pick up will continue operations as normal.
    • Please note: There are currently no changes to the schedule for residential or commercial garbage and recycling pickup. Should changes become necessary, updates will be posted on the City of New Braunfels website and on the City’s social media platforms.
  • Restrooms, water fountains, and other facilities in all City parks have been winterized and will be closed on Saturday, Sunday, Monday, and will remain closed until freezing temperatures dissipate.

Road and Bridge Preparation

Preparations by City Public Works crews have already been made to lay down gravel and de-icing agents on local roads and bridges should that become necessary. TxDOT is making similar preparations for I-35 and other major highways. Should road closures become necessary, residents can find updated local road closure information on the City of New Braunfels website. If icy conditions form, drivers are advised to avoid travel, if possible.

City Meetings & Events

  • The Martin Luther King Day March through downtown New Braunfels is planned for Monday morning. Attendees are advised to dress warmly, and portable restrooms have been staged at Prince Solms Park. For more information on that event, please visit the New Braunfels MLK Association Facebook page.
  • There are currently no other changes to City-related meetings or events. Any changes will be posted on the City website and on the City’s social media platforms.

Warming Center

A warming center is being offered by Gruene United Methodist Church in their Outreach Building, located at 2629 East Common St., on Monday and Tuesday from 10am to 2pm. This warming center offers temporary relief from the cold but is not a shelter. Anyone in need of overnight accommodations should contact the New Braunfels Salvation Army at 830-608-9129.
