The City of New Braunfels has launched Youth City University, a pilot program for local high school students that will run concurrently with the City’s already-established City University program. The program will give those students an up-close look at how city services are provided, with presentations, demonstrations, and tours, including City administration, Police, Fire, Public Works, Parks, Library, and more.
“This is a great opportunity for local high school students to learn more about their City government and to begin the process of getting involved in their community,” said Assistant City Manager Jared Werner. “The City is always looking for ways to engage with residents, and we don’t want to overlook our youth population who will one day be the leaders in our community.”
To be considered for the Youth City University pilot program, applicants must by City of New Braunfels residents and be enrolled in 9th through 12th grade at a public, private, or home school. Classes will be held weekly on Thursdays from 5:30pm-8:30pm beginning March 21st and ending May 2nd. Graduation from the program is scheduled for the evening of Monday, May 13th. Youth participants will not only attend class sessions but will also meet separately as a cohort to develop a presentation that will be provided to City Council. The presentation will focus on their City University experience, observations, and possible recommendations for youth programs and services provided in the community.
